Peter Stofcik, Sr.1912-1998
Faithful husband. Loving father.
Caring grandfather. Son of the parish.
Born December 6th, 1912 in Whiting. Son of John and Mary Stofcik. Baptized
by Fr. Benedict Rajcany. Married Mary Buksar in 1938. Father of Mary Ann, Kathleen,
Judy, Raymond and Peter, Jr. Seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
"The Boss" as he was lovingly called by family and friends, was a machinist at
Standard Oil for 44 years. Pete, who proudly served as an usher at St. John
for many years, was a staunch member of the Holy Name Society and the Knights
of Columbus. Pete was a fixture at Parish bingo events, distributing cards and
calling out winners. Pete took up bowling after age 70 and posted a 140 average
in the annuitants' bowling league. He also loved being outdoors and was quite
skilled at ice skating, fishing and gardening.
Most importantly, Pete was a generous and giving man. Many people of the area
benefited from the gift of Pete's time and talent or from his gentle words and
warn smile. Many children enjoyed gifts of candy or what loose change Pete may
have had in his coin purse.
Jesus said of St. Peter, "Upon this rock I will build my church." Over the years,
St. John the Baptist has been blessed to have many, many parishioners give of
themselves to provide the parish with a solid foundation in the Whiting/Roberstdale
community. Pete's generous, yet humble donations of time talent and treasure
have certainly helped make St. John the Baptist's foundation stronger.
